Alfred Hitchcock's first collaboration with the luminous Grace Kelly was this adaptation of Frederick Knott's Broadway hit about a money-hungry London socialite/tennis champion (Ray Milland) who thinks he can murder his way out of debt. The target is his unwary wife (Kelly), who has renewed an old friendship with an American writer (Robert Cummings). But nothing goes as planned. DIAL M FOR MURDER has been remade and revamped multiple times, most notably in 1998 with Michael Douglas, Gwyneth Paltrow and Viggo Mortensen as A PERFECT MURDER. But Hitchcock's version still crackles, with Milland visibly relishing his despicable duties and Kelly demonstrating genuine star quality (notice how her wardrobe gets darker and drabber as the complications continue to pile up).
