Working in 1950s New York, Lionel Essrog (Edward Norton) is a private eye with Tourette syndrome, making him prone to tics, verbal outbursts, and a fairly lonely existence. But when his boss and mentor Frank Minna (Bruce Willis) gets shot in an investigation gone south, it’s up to Lionel to pursue the case, unraveling a mystery that takes him from forgotten slums and Harlem jazz clubs to the highest levels of power in the city.

Based on a novel by Jonathan Lethem, and written and directed by Edward Norton, the film’s 20-year development allowed for Norton to take a deep dive into the character of Lionel, whose neurotic and witty verbal riffing is deftly performed, as is the film’s smoky jazz score (which also features a new composition by Radiohead’s Thom Yorke).

An incredible ensemble cast including Willem Dafoe, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Leslie Mann, and Ethan Suplee packs the film with fascinating characters, while Alec Baldwin looms large as city planner Moses Randolph, a power broker whose sinister machinations ramify far beyond his era. A sprawling look at poverty, race, and corruption in America, MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN is a dense, atmospheric noir with teeth.
