It’s Christmas and you’re stuck at boarding school with the most hated teacher on campus – sounds like the perfect premise for an Alexander Payne film. THE HOLDOVERS reunites the Academy-Award-Winning writer/director of SIDEWAYS and THE DESCENDANTS with our favorite lovable curmudgeon, Paul Giamatti, for a holiday story that elicits tears and laughs in equal measure.
Not only does super strict teacher Paul Hunham (Giamatti) have to deal with the everyday mediocrity of his students, he now has to babysit the handful of them with nowhere to go over the holidays. Forced to contend with a damaged troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa) and the school’s head cook (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), who has just lost a son in Vietnam, the three of them form an unlikely bond while the specter of the war hangs heavy over the holiday.
"Nearly 20 years after Alexander Payne and Paul Giamatti teamed up for Sideways, they’re reunited for the wintry character study, with Giamatti once again turning in masterful work as a hard-tippling misanthrope..."-Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times
"What you do walk away from this cracked Christmas-miracle tale with is an admiration for what Giamatti can do with such flawed people... and how richer we are for having him and Payne give such lost souls such a generous spotlight to grow." —Rolling Stone
"Funny, sad, witty, poignant, filled with snark and heart and great acting. It also manages to be a film set at the holidays that offers something truly new for the genre." —Deadline Hollywood
"THE HOLDOVERS is a warm hug of a movie and the closest thing we've had to a new holiday classic in quite some time." —Entertainment Weekly
